The 2023 LCANZ WA District Convention of Synod will be held Friday 3rd to Sunday 5th of March, hosted at Concordia Lutheran Church, Duncraig.
This year's theme is: Jesus Christ our Living Hope - based on 1 Peter 1:3
Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead (1 Pet 1:3 NIV)
Delegates, congregation members, and visitors are all invited to attend the Synod, please register here.
The Synod will begin with a Welcome and light refreshments on Friday evening, worship and Synod business on Saturday followed by a dinner at Hillary's Yacht Club, with business then concluding on Sunday with worship and close of Synod including any items requiring voting.
District and Church-wide representatives will attend the Synod for fellowship and business purposes. This opportunity allows us to engage with members from not only across our vast WA, but also with Lutheran leaders from around Australia and New Zealand.
The LCANZ WA District holds a Convention of the Synod on a 2-yearly cycle (incl. an AGM). The WA Congregations are the members of the WA District, and congregations appoint delegates for the 2-year term of a Synod. They can also appoint an alternative to attend the Convention if needed. The Convention of Synod also serves as that year's AGM. The WA Synod is typically held on the weekend before the Labour Day public holiday.
Delegates have been emailed any necessary details, and the 2023 Book of Reports will be sent out to delegates 3 weeks before the Synod. To reduce our environmental impact, the Book of Reports will not be printed but will be made available digitally on this page. Delegates may print their own copies if desired, or Concordia may be able to cater to a small number of requests to print copies for a small donation.
What's with the District and the Synod?
The WA District membership body is called the Synod. The Synod typically meets every two years at a Convention of Synod where the majority of reporting and business occurs. Congregation elected delegates to the Synod are those delegates for the whole two year period, and can be called upon to meet or vote between the scheduled two-year gathering of the Synod.
In recent years the WA District has also met in the alternate year with a Mission and Ministry themed conference - the M&M. This reflects the purpose and reason for the District's existence - to support the ministry and mission of the Lutheran Churches in WA.
The WA District is also it's own legally incorporated body in WA - the "Inc." at the end of our name. In order to fulfil our Incorporated Association responsibilities we must hold a general meeting annually (AGM) for our members. The members being the Congregations, so their elected delegates are the humans required to be present at that meeting. The effect for our District is then to have this short official meeting of the elected delegates at some time during the M&M Conference weekend, with minimal business. In the other year the usual Convention of Synod fulfils the AGM requirements, and more, as part of that meeting.
